Breathing
new
life
into
our
own
brand
and
website

Client:

Silk Studio

Services:

Web development, UI design, Brand identity

Location:

Jan 2021

As a digital design studio that prides itself on creating original and functional
solutions, we were keen to make sure that we practised what we preached.
Whilst our clients work often takes centre stage, we also felt it was important to
act as an
ardent example of the kind of results prospective newcomers can
expect.

With the Covid-19 pandemic putting much of our client work on hold, it gave us
the opportunity to flex our creative muscles and spend some time
re-establishing our brand identity and web presence.

This needed to be strong and identifiable but also thoughtful and unobtrusive
so as not to obscure the limelight from the work we do for others. The goal was
to create a lasting identity that would resonate with potential clients and evoke
our interpretation of
'good design'
.

Re-inventing
our
visual
identity

The
brand
needed
to
be
simple
but
methodical
and
well
thought
out.
Colour
was
used
sparingly
whilst
typography
was
used
heavily,
taking
reference
from
the
masterful
posters
of
20th
Century
artists
like
Armin
Hofmann
and
Josef
Müller-Brockmann.

Leaning
substantially
on
our
geometric,
sans-serif
typeface,
the
aim
was
to
appear
sophisticated
and
contemporary
whilst
leaving
room
for
playfulness
with
the
way
the
type
is
used
and
the
words
that
are
chosen,
rather
than
the
ligatures
themselves
as
well
as
the
occasional
use
of
the
accent
pink.

Showcasing
our
creative
potential

The
website
had
three
main
goals:
(1.)
Effectively
communicate
who
we
are
and
how
we
do
things,
(2.)
Showcase
in-depth
case
studies
of
previous
client
work
and
(3.)
Help
to
encourage
users
to
enquire
about
our
services.

We
achieved
these
by
creating
a
series
of
unique,
content-rich
pages,
a
modular
'block'
system
that
allows
for
bespoke
case
study
layouts
to
be
built
from
predefined
components
in
the
CMS
from
a
series
of
predefined
components
and
an
intuitive
and
convenient
multi-step
form
for
users
looking
to
start
a
project.

All
this
was
bundled
into
an
engaging
user
experience
filled
with
charming
micro-interactions
and
seamless
page
transitions
as
well
as
quirky
little
tricks
like
showing
our
Spotify
currently
playing
song
at
the
bottom
of
our
menu
(for
better
or
worse!).

The
site
was
built
entirely
in
React
which
is
great
for
speed,
efficiency
and
giving
the
site
that
SPA
feeling.
We
used
Gatsby
for
the
front-end
and
Sanity
as
the
CMS
allowing
us
to
easily
add
additional
case
studies
and
blog
posts
as
needed.
